Kansas City RoyalsBrett and Lau. The legendary Charlie Lau served as the Royals' hitting coach from 1971-1978. Most notable among the proponents of his method was Hall of Famer George Brett, as well as Hal McRae, Amos Otis and Willie Wilson. Among Lau's guiding principles were shifting your weight back before striding into the ball, keeping hands flat through the hitting area, keeping the head still, and releasing the upper hand at the moment of contact. Brett, who always gives Lau his due credit for aiding his development as a hitter, finished his career batting over .300 with more than 3,000 hits and more than 1500 runs batted in. That puts him in pretty select company - only Henry Aaron, Willie Mays and Stan Musial eclipsed those three milestones. As Yankees pitcher Rudy May once said, "The only way to pitch to him is way inside so you can force him to pull the ball. That way the line drive won't hit you."
Brett is the only player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Royal. His number 5 stands retired along with these: 10 - Dick Howser, 20 - Frank White, 42 - Jackie Robinson.
