Congratulations 2011 World Series Champion Cardinals!
The Ultimate Cardinal. Stanley Frank "Stan the Man" Musial was born Stanislaw Franciszek Musial on November 21, 1920. Musial played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball, from 1941 to 1963, all for the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League. A 24-time All-Star selection, Musial accumulated 3,630 hits and 475 home runs during his career, was named the National League's Most Valuable Player three times, was a member of three World Series championship teams, and in 1969 was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Cards originally signed Musial, in 1938, as a pitcher, but, by the time he made his Major League debut in 1941, he had already been converted into an outfielder. He quickly established himself as a consistent and productive hitter, leading the National League in six different offensive categories in 1943 while earning his first MVP award. After winning his second World Series in 1944, Musial missed the entire 1945 season serving during WWII with the United States Navy.
In 1946, Musial resumed his consistent hitting and annual All-Star appearances. In '48, he finished just one home run shy of winning baseball's Triple Crown. After struggling offensively in 1959, Musial used a personal trainer to increase his productivity until he retired in 1963. In 1999, Stan Musial was selected to Major League Baseball's All-Century Team.¹
